Service Description

Understanding meteorology and weather patterns is central to safe passage planning and tactical decision-making afloat. Hosted at our Thameside clubhouse in Central London, this two-evening marine meteorology workshop transforms complex atmospheric data and forecasts into clear, actionable insights for skippers, passage planners, and offshore crew. You will learn how to interpret synoptic surface pressure charts, evaluate isobar spacing to calculate geostrophic wind strength, and track the lifecycle of low-pressure depressions. The curriculum covers warm, cold, and occluded frontal identification, predicting wind veering and backing, cloud sequence analysis, and evaluating GRIB digital forecasting models. You will also explore local coastal microclimates—including sea breeze generation, katabatic gusts, and headland funnelling—and analyse sea state dynamics like wind-against-tide conditions to optimise passage timing. Full Syllabus: • Synoptic Pressure Charts & Systems: Isobar spacing, gradient wind calculations, high/low pressure systems, and tracking mid-latitude depression lifecycles. • Frontal Passages & Cloud Sequences: Identifying warm, cold, and occluded fronts; predicting wind veering/backing; cloud formation shifts; and pressure tendencies. • Digital Models & Forecast Analysis: Interpreting GRIB files, Shipping Forecasts, MetOffice synoptics, wave height/swell dynamics, and wind-against-tide sea states. • Coastal Microclimates & Tactical Planning: Sea breeze land-sea temperature differentials, headland wind funnelling, katabatic offshore gusts, and weather routing.
